Curt Fretham started the business in 1994 with a single house and an oversized yard in Minnetonka. From there the company has evolved - from creating duplexes, to one and two-property subdivisions, to large mixed-use developments of single and multi-family residences, and commercial buildings. For over two decades Lake West has been acquiring, renovating and developing underutilized properties in the Twin Cities and surrounding suburbs – and creating exceptional new places for people to live and work.
Our tour de force is creating infill developments on underused land in a way that adds real value to a community. Projects that require flexibility, creativity and imaginative solutions to challenges are our specialty.

Watching his father go through the process of developing the family horse farm into residential lots and lots for apartment buildings, Curt got his first taste of land development as a child. Later, in the early 90’s he began buying and fixing up duplexes, subdividing lots and learning the ropes of land development. Curt’s amicable, collaborative approach to negotiating the inevitable resistance that goes along with land development and his creative vision for innovative design has, over and over again, resulted in beautiful, well-functioning neighborhoods and satisfied residents.
Kayla Mack – Development Assistant
Kayla brings a huge collection of skills and experience to Lake West Development. In addition to a previous marketing position with a large Twin Cities real estate development company, she brings experience in the healthcare, restaurant, food and grocery industries. Kayla manages ongoing projects, supports all aspects of the development cycle and manages a number of Lake West’s properties. Her background in a wide variety of industries gives Kayla the resourcefulness and versatility to skillfully juggle a myriad of details and tasks, keeping projects on track, on time and on budget.
